Is the LCS-9 USS Little Rock.
It’s been an exciting 2 weeks, and next week I’ll be back with 2 Rental Car Reviews and 2 Combat Ship Reviews.

Launching a new ship?

I like how much technology and ship building has progressed, and our way of getting them into the water is still “fuck it, launch this bastard in sideways and hope it doesn’t roll”.

Unless it’s a sub then they go in ass first.

I don’t know what, exactly, your job is, but it’s definitely cooler than mine.

I love the announcement. “Thanks for watching, look at the ship and leave.” I’m paraphrasing a little, but yeah...

Is this is still at Marinette Marine getting fitted out?

It’s finished, now get the fuck away!

Yeah. 9 is the Little Rock, and she’s actually in the water now. They are painting, lagging, and starting equipment fit out.

She’s actually in the water now. I just chose the pic because it’s the best one of the Little Rock I could find. But I was up there doing inspections.

Thanks, it was pretty sweet. LCS is not my favorite ship in the fleet, but it was still pretty awesome.

I work for a naval architecture firm. We designed the LCS Freedom class, and the DDG-51 class of ships. My job is usually pretty boring, I sit in an office and take dimensions off of AutoCAD and plug them into Excel spreadsheets. But occasionally they unchain me from the desk and let me go support ship checks. That’s when it gets awesome.

It depends, a lot of yards are getting away from side launches, it’s very stressful on hulls. MMC and a few other places still do it because of space restrictions - the river isn’t much wider than the LCS is long so a stern launch would be... difficult. Most yards now, though, are doing stern launches or building them in graving docks they can flood down.

They are starting to build subs in graving docks that they can flood down after it’s ready to go and it just kind of starts floating. Much less exciting, but also much less stress on the ships structure.

Ah, cool. My grandfather was a plank owner on a Sub in the 1970s I believe. Rode it down on launch.

Probably. Can’t tell though if it’s because of how much he hates the LCS or how jealous he is.

That’s awesome!
